Week 5 Blog Post

"I'm Your Hoochie Coochie Man" by Muddy Waters

First things first, do not look up what does hoochie coochie mean. Todays translation is different from what he sings about... or so we hope so. (After further research, it still has the same context).

This song is a great Chicago Blues song, really one of the first of it's kind. Now this would not be a song to sing to your mom back in the 1950's, but still a great one to jam out in your bedroom. Muddy Waters went from a traditional Delta-based blues to a newer Chicago blues ensemble sound. In this song, he boasts about good fortune and his mesmerizing way with women from hoodoo. Hoodoo is a spiritual practice and traditions back in the 50's. Lets just say your average grandma was not doing hoodoo.

Outside of the lyrics and meaning, it's a really good song. It's a slow, smooth jazz dabbled into the new and upcoming rock and roll. The vocalist uses a little bit of crooning to really pull in his listener. I enjoyed the electric guitar and the drums in the background. I imagine this was a first for this time. Something unique about this song is the use of stop time, pauses in the song, to allow the vocalist to have a solo.

  1. I also listened to this song for this weeks listening blog, and our analysis of the song are very different. I never researched any of the meanings of the background of the song, but it is interesting to hear about the Hoodoo and spiritual practices. Also I agree with your thoughts on the actual music of the song, I also enjoyed the sound of the guitar, drums, and everything else about it.
