 "Smells like Teen Spirit" by Nirvana.

Smells like Teen Spirit by Nirvana was one of the first Alternative / Indie songs that really hit the top charts. Alternative and Indie music had been around for some time but this was the one that hit the charts, was played on the radio, and loved by many, even me. 

Growing up in San Diego, most high school aged teenagers all listen to Alternative and Indie. We would listen to more current artists like Dirtyheads, alt-J, and the Artic Monkeys. This curiosity leads you to the originals like Nirvana. 

Smells like Teen Spirit is the perfect song for both the slow and smooth, to the head banging. The dru s and electric guitar really bring the song to its up tempo rhythm. It has mellow verses where the lyrics are clear with just the drums in the background. When it reaches, to the chorus, that's when the beat picks and the all the instruments come in together.

The lyrics also are a new kind of attitude. The song refers to his addiction to heroin. So maybe not the best topic but that was current and very popular back then, especially for those who listened to this type of music.
