I Shot the Sherriff.... but did not shoot the deputy - Eric Clapton
There are two versions to this classic. One by Bob Marley and the other by Eric Clapton. Bob Marley was the original and Eric Clapton sung a cover only 1 year after. Both are very famous and well recognized. Clapton's version only adds to the beautiful, smooth reggae, adding in soft rock.
Eric Clapton is known for his guitar solos. In his song "Layla", it is the guitar solo that catches everyone's attention. In this song, he has no guitar solo. Yet it is still great. I really like the reggae beat mixed with the soft rock. The slow pace in the song originates from the reggae and really allows soft rock. You could not incorporate a fast beat with this one. It really blends well together. I also like his high tone of pitch in the song. It almost replicates Bob Marley' voice but is unique enough to stand out.
The lyrics have meaning to it as well. When it was written by Bob Marley, the intention was not to speak bad of cops. It has a different meaning but will not go into in this blog.
What I love about music is that it is a creative platform that allows artists to do what they want to create masterpieces. Just like no two people are the same no two artists are the same. I think its interesting that a song can also take on several meanings, be it what it means to someone, how they feel, or how it is literally interpreted.
ReplyDeleteI heard the cover by Bob Marley and thought it was the original song it's nice to know that the person who actually wrote I shot the sheriff is Eric Clapton. I didn't know that Bob Marley's cover of the song was to support the police. Great post. I learned alot about this song.
ReplyDeleteI think that the cover is better maybe its because it was the one I heard first. I've noticed that when you hear a certain song first normally you enjoy that one more unless the cover is worse then the normal. My favorite example for that would Africa
ReplyDeleteI love this song! This is a good song but it has an interesting message! Its really interesting to grow up with these songs and as you are a kid make up a new meaning for the song! When you are older you soon realize that what you thought the song meant was nothing like you imagine. Overall a really good song!
